The Burning Crusade of WOW has created many new features to enlarge the game in many interesting and fun ways. One of these additions is a new profession, jewelcrafting.

jewelcrafting can create beautiful jewelry and trinkets from metals and rare gems. By machining the raw ore mined from the diverse mineral resources, jewelcrafters can abstract gems from the ore which they can use for their craft. jewelcrafters mainly depend on their prospecting skills to get precious stones, this is different from miners who sometimes find gems while gathering ore,

Jewelcrafters work with gems in different ways. If a jewelcrafter uses gems to create jewelry, he only needs the raw, uncut stones. Another way to use gems is to cut them, preparing them to be used in socketed items. Gems are different in colors and shapes. Different types of gems have different basic properties, and a gem's cut also determines the influence the gem will have. Jewelcrafters can learn various kinds of cuts for each kind of gem. Take the Azure Moonstone as an example; it can be cut into a lustrous, stormy, solid, or sparkling Azure Moonstone. Each one of these cuts provides different bonuses when using in a socketable item. Placing cut gems into an item's sockets will increase the bonuses of these gems to the item. WOW players can also customize their better gears to suit their individual play style by jewelcrafting.

At higher levels of Jewelcrafting, socketed items and particular cut gems become an essential part of an adventurer's bag of tricks. Both armor and weapons can have sockets. You may find some in WOW dungeons, but as the development of the game, there will be plentiful new recipes for all the professions. Socketed items are actually rare and even of epic quality.
